Jon Mathews started his landscaping career at the age of 12. Mowing lawns quickly grew into landscape design and installation as Jon created his first official business, The Lawn Stylist. After a difficult year of crippling freezes that killed the plants Jon needed for his business, he realized that landscaping professionals throughout Houston, Texas needed a more sustainable way to source high-quality plants and materials—and in 1998, he opened Shades of Texas to fulfill that need.
As Shades of Texas grew to become one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the area, Jon's wife, Brenda, and son, Jon Gabriel, became joint owners of the company, while Jon's daughter plays an active role in daily operations. This is a true family-owned and operated business with a long history of serving landscape contractors in Houston and Magnolia.
