Ornamental Trees

Redbud

Filler Scientific Name

This elegant tree is known for being one of the first signs of spring! Small, bright purple-pink blooms cover the branches in late February with purple heart-shaped leaves that turn green in the heat of summer. Being deciduous, redbuds drop yellow/brown foliage in fall and have beautiful bare branches in winter. Growth rate is slow to moderate, reaching 15-20 feet tall in 20 years. Soil preference ranges from sandy loam to light clay, preferring well-drained conditions. Redbuds grow best in some protection, preferring afternoon sun protection in the heat of summer and regular watering. Oklahoma redbuds are typically more tolerant of full southwestern sun exposure than Eastern redbuds.
